![]() I'm pretty paranoid and privacy focused myself. I'm perfectly fine with installing my Netflix account on a firestick for the purposes of binging the latest season of "Narcos" in a hotel room. However, for a dedicated "streaming device" as per the topic of this thread. ![]() Same goes for Gmail (use K-9 and a more privacy-conscious email provider instead), Google Maps (replace with an open-source app based on Open Street Maps), Google Calendar (use DAVx5 plus etar or something), and so on.I'm pretty paranoid and privacy focused myself. E.g., you can replace Google Search/Google Assistant with a search provider of your own, and withdraw Google Assistant all permissions which pose a risk from a privacy perspective. HOW TO USE FIRESTICK AT HOTEL ANDROIDEtc.Įven if you are unwilling to go that route and stick to an off-the-shelf, preinstalled Android OS, you can still uninstall or disable data-hungry apps. HOW TO USE FIRESTICK AT HOTEL INSTALLI can install a custom ROM without Google apps (or with a reduced amount of apps, such as pico/nano Gapps). On my Android smartphone and tablet, it's a totally different scenario. AFAIK, you can't root and you can't run a custom ROM on recent Fire devices. There's little tweaking you can do, little you can do to remove or to limit the functionality of Amazon apps. Most times, it's late when I get to my room and so it's okay to just lay on the bed or a couch and watch from a screen I brought along with me.įire OS is pretty much locked up. And if it doesn't, I'm content with my tablet or laptop. Often times these days, streaming from my Android devices works just fine (e.g., if the hotel has a modern TV from, say, Samsung or LG). Some cost a bit more than a stick, sure.īTT: Personally, I don't carry a dedicated streaming device when travelling. So I'd rather recommend using one of the more open/less-data hungry devices. It's "Home" doesn't even work unless you have an internet connection (absurd as you may have stuff there which doesn't require an internet connection). The Fire TV stick sends so much data back to Amazon, it's shocking. We also use the Fire Stick at home but have an older one dedicated for travel that is loaded with a VPN, Kodi and all THAT stuff along with Netflix, Disney Plus, Apple TV app, etc.I mean, most of that stuff runs directly on Kodi. I don’t think Roku, Chromecast, Apple TV have that feature. The nice thing about the Fire TV stick is that it has "captive portal access" built in which allows for I Agree or entering the room number that many hotel WIFI require. Always carry an Amazon Fire TV stick but do also take a USB cord in case the TV doesn’t have one.
